On 12th August, 1917, the 6th East Kent (Buffs) battalion of 37 Brigade, 12th Division left their camp at Beaurains, near Arras, and moved into the front line trenches nearby where they remained until relieved on 18th August. The battalion diary for 17th August simply recorded that it was a ‘quiet day’, but obviously not quiet enough for William Naylor who was killed, most likely as a result of shellfire.
